Meet Author Emily Walker!

   I knew I was a writer when …. I wrote a 32 page book report that was only supposed to be 10 pages.

   In which genres do you write?

Horror, Paranormal Fiction, Paranormal Romance, Sci-Fi, New Adult, Drama, Romance, Fantasy, and Erotica…. I write a lot of different things.

What is your favorite thing about being an author? Creating worlds and placing characters in them.

  What was the biggest obstacle you overcame in the road to finishing your first book?

Believing in myself, sometimes I think, “Is this crap?” I have to build myself up.

   Who is your favorite character you’ve created? Why?

I have lots of favorite characters. Choosing one is difficult. I enjoyed writing Bryant in Why Yellow Jackets Can’t Find the Hole, because I had to think like a guy. I enjoyed writing Cassie in Zombified, because she is constantly changing.

 

   What are you working on currently? I am working on a romance novella Charlotte’s Irish Warlock for Romance After Midnight, an imprint of my publisher Midnight Hour. I am also working on my new sci-fi series, I think it will be New Adult. Zombified is now in edits and will be out March 15^th!

Capturing the Castle (How “Once Upon a Castle” was born)

On a bitterly cold, November afternoon, I found myself stranded near Bamburgh Castle on the wild Northumberland coast whilst the local, old fashioned garage, with tall petrol pumps, repaired my broken-down car.

The delicate, somewhat bright, late autumn sunlight created an eerie, pastel coloured scene, albeit tempered by a biting breeze, yet quite magical, certainly ancient, and almost ethereal.

Vikings have landed here,’ I told myself scanning the unique white beaches below the hazy castle ramparts. It was one of those strange experiences that triggered the imagination and I could see a Scandinavian longship coming ashore, disgorging horned-helmeted warriors seizing the beach before storming inland to ravage the sparse Saxon populace. I could feel that there was a tale to be told.

With the genesis of a story in my mind, I conducted research into Northumbrian castles and was intrigued to discover there was another ruined castle along the coast. This gave me a plot basis involving two castles, one of which was real and the other a phantom! Ideas built as I thought this was an area to where children were evacuated during World War II.

Things shaped towards an exciting novel for young adolescents involving twelve-year-old twins, Tom and Mary (to appeal to both sexes) who dread being sent from southern England to Aunt Victoria’s Northumberland farm. Yet she proves to be young, and fun, until lessons are arranged with a terrible private tutor, Miss Urquart. Their London Uncle Toby had said: “There will be castles to explore with ghosts and things.”

Teenage rebelliousness ensues as the twins escape and riotous, scary adventures involving castles, Vikings and even the Royal Navy begin.

“Once Upon a Castle” is republished by USA publisher GMTA Publishing under their imprint, Mythos Press.

Uncle Toby had said that there would be castles to explore, with ghosts and things. This helps to cheer up the glum twelve-year old Lovell twins, Tom and Mary, leaving their schools and loving parents to be evacuated to wild Northumbria during World War II. Then the adventure begins.

They live with their Aunt Victoria and Uncle Leslie, meet the loveable ‘Mrs M’, a strange dog called ‘Scamp’ and, worst, the terrible private tutor, Miss Urquart, from whom they run away to find a mysterious castle seen through an old telescope.

Now they are drawn into bizarre supernatural events of a time-warp between the war itself and ancient warfare. They encounter dark forces, as the story twists and turns, and are even rescued by the Royal Navy. Yet, this is only the beginning of more unexpected tragedies before the twins begin to escape from it all.

About the Author

Alan S. Blood worked in the British Civil Service, Advertising and journalism (edited three publications) before qualifying as a Teacher from the University of Reading, England. He enjoyed a long, distinguished career in the Teaching Profession, in both Primary and Secondary levels of education, in several parts of the UK - which eventually led to Senior Management. His main subject area was English and, at one time, he was Head of English and Drama. Throughout, he gained considerable knowledge of literature that children and adolescents enjoy.

Alan now devotes his time to writing novels, plays, screenplays and poetry. He won top award in the ‘Hastings International Poetry Festival’ (2003) with his controversial ‘litter’ poem ‘CONTRITE CAN CANNOT’. The paranormal genre features in much of his prose work.

‘ONCE UPON A CASTLE’ is a ghost story written for young people (but also enjoyed by adults) set in World War 11. It concerns both a real and a phantom castle based upon Alan’s experience of strange castles on the wild Northumbrian coast of England on cold, dark wintry afternoon.

Alan Blood has widely travelled the world and undertook research in Chile where some of his supernatural crime thriller ‘CRY OF THE MACHI A Suffolk Murder Mystery’ is set. He was previously a Cotswold Morris Dancer and the novel is a conflict between the forces of good and evil linking a Chilean ‘Machi’ and ‘organised crime’ to murders in a Suffolk Morris Men side.

Alan enjoys wildlife photography in the Welsh countryside, painting and scraperboard engraving. He lives in a Victorian (1873) house below the Cambrian Mountains of Mid-Wales.

Recently, I have had the very good fortune of meeting successful author Melody Anne on Facebook! Yay for fb! Anyway, she was good enough to write up an honest review for me on my book, Piper LeVine A Gypsy's Truth.

For those of you who have met or know of her (millions of you) you're aware that she's crazy busy. So I'd like to take the opportunity to thank her again for taking the time to read my book and write a review.

Here it is:

I was enthralled with this story from the very first paragraph. First there is the self-serving father of Piper who I immediately disliked. Of course, this is always great. I need a good character to hate from the start. No book is good without its villains. Then Eris Kelli does a remarkable job of creating this plot that is unique and new, but not so overstretched as to make me lose interest.

I’ve read many fantasy type books and this one is ranked right up at the top. I found Nicholas to be a mystery I had to unravel. The more I got to know this unique character, the more I wanted to know him. Like his description says, he’s captivating and dangerous. I found myself anxious to find out exactly what he’d do next.

Piper is a heroine you will find yourself routing for and I found myself beside her as she sought answers to a life she couldn’t imagine existed for her. This book left me on the edge of my seat and I can’t wait to read Eris Kelli’s next book and read how this amazing story unfolds.

Don't Tell Me There's No Time

  It's easy to say there is no time to write. Especially if you haven't started your project yet. The truth is there is time if you make time. Many writers will schedule a specific time in the day when they will write. This works if you honor your schedule and don't miss your allotted time. In fact it's a very responsible way to make absolutely sure you can fit writing into your everyday.
  My case is a bit tricky being that I've got a newborn. My schedule is not currently my own as all parents know who've dealt with a brand new baby. I could really use this as an excuse not to write but I haven't. For one thing, I have to write. I get depressed if I don't write. It's like breathing for me. I had to make time.
  A drooling cutie pie who already is grabbing at everything is not a good laptop buddy if you're looking to keep your computer in working order, so I had to come up with another way. I carry around a notebook and whenever I get a chance I write. Sometimes I'll have tons of pages that I will then have to transfer to my computer but in the end the writing is there and my project is progressing. For those of you who are struggling. Give my carry the notebook advice a try. Good luck and happy writing!

The Sounds of Writing

   For the last... I'd say three books I've written music has made a big difference for me. In fact there are many writers who swear by music for inspiration and for background noise. In my experience it serves well for both. Stephanie Meyer is one for example who has written about being inspired by music and she's not the only one. On the other side many written works have inspired works of art whether they be music or paintings or whatever.
   Music is a great idea to help get a writer out of a rut and into a groove. There are some bumps you can run into trying to mix music with writing. Here are some tips for trying it out. If you're going to write a high pressure, blood pumping moment in your project you should pick out a few songs that do that for you. Pick music that gets your blood pumping, music that paints the picture in your minds eye of what is happening in your project. The same goes for other moods, romantic moments, sad ones or happy.
   Ideally you will select music that you know. This is because you want to have it in the background of your mind and not in the forefront which it will be if it's unfamiliar to you. You'll be trying to decide if you like the music instead of settling into a comfortable groove in which your fingers will fly across your keyboard. Try it out and see what works for you.
   Right now I am trying out the website Pandora Radio in which you can input songs or artists and it will create a free radio station for you that plays like music. I am still deciding on it for my writing as it does introduce many new artists and that can be distracting but I love it for my everyday background.

New Years

So for my New Year's Resolution I've promised myself that I will do better at keeping my readers and followers informed of what's going on with my writing.

I'm excited to report that my book, Harper Levine and a Gypsy's Truth, is really close to getting a release date. Yay! :D I'll let you know as soon as I do.

Shaking things up

   Whether you are a writer or a reader my advice today is to shake things up. Read a genre you have never tried before. Write from a different POV it will refine your skills and maybe you'll love the new POV. Another shake up that I particularly feel gives us the refreshing we all need is to go out and do something that is different. Try hiking and see if you like that, or ice skating, archery, or my favorite; road trip.  This picture is from my last road trip to Bryce Canyon :D

Guest Stacey Kennedy On Writer's Block

Do I dare talk about the one thing all writers fear—writer’s block *cue scary music* Of course I do, that’s why I’m here, which by the way, a big thank you for letting me stop by for a visit. Now, let’s get right to it!

As writers we all cringe at those two little words and hope that it never happens to us. But guess what, it will. Truthfully, I’ve been really lucky and have only experienced writers block once. It was while I worked on A Silent Howl, the second novel in The Blue Bloods series.

My problem came when I hit the middle of the story. Up to this point, it was smooth sailing, but all of a sudden, I hit a total dead end. No matter how much I tired, the story just stopped, and I hadn’t a clue how to continue it. My ideas fizzled out. Frustrated, I fought against it, as most writers probably do. Said a few choice curse words, pounded my fists against the table and even uttered a threat to thrash my laptop.

But in the end, it was one conversation that saved it all. I sat down with a friend and vented. Started right from the beginning of the story to the middle where my problems began. She asked questions, I answered them. After a while, an idea started to present itself in the midst of our conversation. It was kinda like a “ah-ha” moment. One little twist in chapter three needed to take place to open up a whole plot line to continue with the story and tie it all together.

So, my advice is keep your friends close. Just like with personal issues, venting out an issue can always feel like a big weight lifted off your shoulders. It allows you to get out of your mind for a little while and see something from a different point of view, which for me, was exactly what I needed.

Knowing your characters

To write a fictional story it is important to know your main characters. I do that by writing down every question I can think of and then answering them for each of my characters. The more detail you know about each character the better you will be able to determine how they will respond to the people and situations they are confronted with. Here are a few getting to know you questions to get you started:

1. Does he/she know how to dance?
2. What he/she be doing at a party?
3. Does he/she like to be the center of attention?
4. What kind of things fill his/her mind when stuck in traffic?
5. If he/she was forced to leave their home in a moments notice what is the one thing they would take with them?
6. How many pairs of shoes does this person own?
7. What is their favorite color to wear?
8. How many messages would he/she find on their answering machine after two days of not checking their messages?
9. What is his/her ideal environment?
10. Does he/she have a fear of something that interferes with their daily life?

There's a start but I encourage you to make a list at least four times this size. Happy writing :D
